Impossible Standards

The women of my generation were promised that we could do anything we wanted. Little did we know that actually we would be required to do everything. Go to college, get the perfect job, have perfect hair, marry the perfect man, be bendy like Stretch Armstrong, cook like Julia Childs, have an ass you can crack walnuts on, make a lot of money, don’t be materialistic, expect nothing of your relationships, don’t be emotional, but please be feminine, have kids, don’t let kids get in the way of your career. I AM EXHAUSTED! I cannot live up to the Pinterest hype. For that matter I cannot keep up with the instagram girls. I want to know what’s going on in politics and culture. I do not want to spend 2 hours squatting. I want to be outside in nature, so I don’t want to spend all weekend cleaning to have the perfect house. I don’t want to feel like a failure because I can’t do a split or because I haven’t quite figured out what I want to do for the rest of my life.

I am emotionally exhausted and I need a break from the having it all together and being perfect. I want someone else to worry about getting everything done for a change. I’d like to be the one who has her expectations met. And it’d be nice to be valued for more than what you can jot down on a piece of paper.

This rant was going somewhere but since I’m in no mood to be organized, I’ll end with this; ladies you should be allowed to be you and to take a break. Some days you’re going to need to be mad. Other days you may need to be flighty but trying so hard to never let anything phase you is just bound to create a whole bunch of resentment and inevitably an explosion. So let it out, disappear if you need to, but don’t let their impossible standards win.
