Good Over Evil

I had originally intended to post something else today but given the events of last night in Manchester, England it just seemed unmindful. My prayers go out to the victims, their families, the whole of Manchester, and the whole world.

This attack feels particularly heinous because of the nature of the event where it took place. An Ariana Grande concert, a performer whose fans consist of primarily young girls and women. An artist whose sweet voice has helped millions forget about a tough day, a rough break up, or the chaos that can otherwise fill our days. Music is our sanctuary, our medicine, and our guide. Last night the innocent melody of the dreams of every little girl that sings into a fake microphone or in the carpool to school was attacked. For no good reason. None. And in response we’ll come to fear one of the very things that can heal us; MUSIC.

With each attack we lose something. We lose our ability to move freely. We relinquish a little more of our autonomy. We tell ourselves it’s for our own safety as we add more bars to the cage. Our hearts grow a little colder. We become more suspicious of those around us. We worry about being in large crowds. We retreat further into our virtual worlds. With every step back away from the door we seem to lose just a little more of our humanity. Everyday it seems harder to talk to each other.

Try as we might we can’t seem to eradicate this evil we face. So maybe we should stop trying to eradicate it and simply overwhelm it with good. Listen to each other, love each other, be kind to each other. Firmly affix yourself to principles that remain true no matter the time. Principles like ‘do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’ But we must stop yelling at each other and pointing fingers. The more venom we spew at one another the more powerful evil becomes. It revels in seeing us broken, fearful, and angry. So let’s show an overwhelming force of character and be good to one another. Never stop dancing.

  1. I like your thoughts on overwhelming others with good! Just like the verse says. We need to be kind and loving toward one and another. People seem to forget that when everything is going good and there is no attacks or anything going on. We need to remember it at all times.

    1. It’s easy to be kind when things are going well, much harder when people are being cruel to us. Just have to pray for the strength to love are on the hard days. Btw thanks so much for stopping by Courtney!
